You know exactly which topics you’d like to cover in your course, but now it’s time to create course content and you’ve hit a road-block. Does this sound familiar?
Many of my clients express these feelings. I’m often getting questions like this one:
“ I’ve been putting together PowerPoints in Canva that will get uploaded into teachable. I think my biggest challenge is deciding how I mix up the content variety. I don’t really like webinars, so I’m leaning towards voice-over PowerPoints, just trying to figure out if that will get old my students. I’m thinking if I vary how I do them and make them interactive.”
This is a great question, and I think it reflects a challenge that many course creators face. In this post, I’ll share some tips and tricks for making your course content more actionable and personalized. By implementing these strategies, you’ll be able to keep your clients engaged from start to finish.
Before getting started, I’d like to highlight one of the biggest mistakes that I see made again and again. It might not seem like a big deal, but it makes the difference between a memorable course and one that is just okay.
Don’t hide behind your content!
During a recent call with a client, he told me that he didn’t want to be seen as the influencer or the teacher. Rather, he preferred just to deliver the content. His plan was to have an automatic voice over for each of his course videos.
The problem with this strategy is that it makes your course feel impersonal and creates a distance between you and your clients. After all, they bought your course to learn directly from an expert (you!), not from a robot.
You may have heard that great content should do the talking, but the truth is that in this day and age, personalization is key. Rather than shying away from the spotlight, try to inject your course with a bit of your personality and view this as an opportunity to connect with your students on another level.
So, how can you make it personal?
There are few things you can do to make your course content more personal and relatable for your clients so that they see your course the whole way through.
1. Make your students feel welcome
The first way to make your course more personal and to make an impact right from the get-go is through the intro video. Yes, the first module should be a video of you talking to your students, as if they’re sitting down with you 1 to 1. They need to know that there is an actual human on the other side of their screen.
You can talk a bit about what you’re going to cover as well as giving some tips for success. Keep it short and sweet – just a couple of minutes will give everything a more personal touch.
(*also, from a tech perspective, make sure your fulfilment process is top-notch so students get access to course materials with ease)
2. Showcase your personality and brand
After you’ve given a warm welcome in your intro video, the following videos can be voice-over videos with branded slides. Even if these slides aren’t face-to-face, you still have the chance to make a personal connection. The goal is to make sure that your students still associate the course with you and your brand.
One way you can do this is by creating a title slide for each module that reflects your branding and shows a photo of you, which is what Courtney Sjoberg, the founder of She Social, does in her course, I find this super effective. 3. Create an offer, not just a course
My mentor, Julie Stoian, is a rockstar when it comes to building out offers that sell. In her course, The Offer Cure, she explains the Rainbow Rule. Essentially, you want your course offer to include as many tangibles possible from her rainbow selections. Think: videos, binder notes, an accountability group, audio files and more. 4. Make your content engaging…so your students actually finish your course
After implementing some of these steps you’ll be on the right track, but don’t forget to keep your modules actionable. I find that it’s best to dedicate each module to one solid topic. This helps break up the course and make it more digestible, while also keeping students moving along with the slides. Gone are the days of hour long videos! Keep your content actionable and curated!
If you’re not sure how to go about doing this, have a quick brainstorm. Think about what might keep YOU interested.
You can also give gamification a shot. For example, let’s say you’re teaching students how to land their first client. Create a challenge where in exchange for sending you a screenshot an invoice for their first client they’ll get some sort of prize. It can be anything really – a customized t-shirt, a gift card, one of your products – really anything you think will spark their attention and desire to win!
Now, it’s time to put it all together
Finally, when it comes to creating a course that your students will actually want to finish, don’t forget to think like a customer. How would you feel if you were on the other side of the screen? By putting your students first and putting these tips into practice you’ll be well on your way to more engaging course content.
